Cafe Xu Hue

The final bánh mì restaurant of 3 on this block of Kingsway. Cafe Xu Hue is cash only, has a dated interior, very friendly and efficient service, and had plenty of families inside eating. Good signs.

The Components

Bread

The bread was standard. Nothing special here.

Veg

Inside, they have thick cut cucumber, daikon, carrot, cilantro, and some mystery herb? It tasted fresh and grassy. Perhaps an asian basil variety. It was a welcome addition.

Spread

There was a light slathering of mayo. It seemed homemade, which was nice, but there could have been a touch more.

Meat

I ordered the #2, “Special Vietnamese sub (cold cuts, pork & vegetables)”. The pork was quite nicely, BBQ style. The sauce on it was good. The chicken was in deli slice form, which I’m admittedly not a fan of, and was a bit grisly? In any case, the meat was alright, and there was certainly enough of it.

Overall Impression

A mid bánh mì, but fast service.

Recommendation

If you’re just looking for bahn mi, Ngon cafe (literally right next door) is a better choice. Cafe Xu Hue has more entree choices though, if you’re in a group.
