Bonjour Banh Mi

Bonjour Banh Mi is one of the furthest out locations I’ve tried, yet the fact it’s only a 15 minute drive away really speaks to the prevalence of banh mi in Vancouver.

The Components

Bread

The bread was good - warm, crust, and soft inside. No notes. As noted on their website, they do bake their own bread which of course gives them a leg up in this department.

Veg

I thought the veg was particularly good here - fresh cucumber and cilantro, and the seasoning on the pickled daikon and carrot was fantastic. I didn’t note any jalapeno on my pork banh mi, it either was too small to notice or wasn’t present. A small detractor.

Spread

The spread was excellent. Mayo and pate, in decent amounts. I noted this style of pate was quite loose.

Meat

I ordered the #2, grilled pork / nem nuong. I noticed the pork was quite “hammy” - cured almost. This is not a detractor in any sense, I thought it was quite nice. There was a bit of a bark on the outside which lends itself to a nice bite. This was really well done.

Overall Impression

Bonjour Banh Mi came recommended from a thread online, and I have to say they live up to the hype. While the shop is small with little seating, the flavor packed into each sandwich is huge and you can tell some care was put into ensuring they deliver an excellent sandwich.

Recommendation

This shop is definitely worth a visit if you’re in Vancouver and love banh mi. I’d place this as my 3rd favorite banh mi in the city at the moment.
