88 Supermarket

88 Supermarket is a local grocery store in Vancouver focusing on Asian ingredients. Their location on 49th features a deli where they make bahn mi to order - how does it stack up? I ordered the #1 special bahn mi.

The Components

Bread

The bread was a little stale, but otherwise appeared good quality. Perhaps this is due to the time of day that we went (early afternoon)

Veg

The veg was excellent - cucumber, pickled diakon and carrot with a good bit of sweetness, cilantro and jalapeno. My only complaint was that I could not taste the spice from the jalapeno.

Spread

Mayo and pate were both present and in sufficient quantities. Good flavor.

Meat

They certainly did not skimp on the meat. I could not say exactly the variety of deli meats, but there were a lot of them, and they were quite tasty. A very meat-forward sandwich.

Overall Impression

I’m impressed. Quite impressed. 88 Supermarket delivered an excellent quality sandwich, and at ~$8, it’s priced in line with other bahn mi sandwiches

Recommendation

I’d highly recommend giving 88 Supermarket’s deli a go. They’re in the top 5, if not the top 3 for me so far on this list.
