Pho Mien Tay
Pho Mien Tay operates right in the heart of downtown Vancouver. As their name suggests, they focus mainly on the famous Vietnamese noodle soup, but they also offer bánh mì. Let’s get into it.
The Components
Bread
The bread was… chewy? This on its own is not necessarily a bad thing, but as we’ll soon find out - it was a bad thing.
Veg
The balance of the sandwich was thrown off by the presence of way too much pickled daikon and carrot. It was less a careful balance of fresh and savory, and just a pickle sandwich. Fresh cilantro, and a couple slivers of jalapeno.
Spread
What spread? After doing some digging, I found perhaps the scantist skiff of mayo I’ve seen yet deep in the heart of the sandwich. No pate was present.
Meat
The meat, while tasty, was thick and chewy. Together with the bread, and the overall dryness of the sandwich, led to a distinctly strange and uncomfortable, chewy and dry eating experience
Overall Impression
Unfortanately for us all, this bánh mì completely missed the mark. While the restaurant was full of happy soup eaters, I have the feeling that bánh mì simply isn’t a priority on their menu.
Recommendation
Avoid coming to Pho Mien Tay if you’re just looking for bánh mì - you’ll be disappointed.
