Ngon Cafe Vancouver
Today, we’re visiting a block on Kingsway that I’m quite fond of - besides the nearby T&T, there’s 3 (3!) bánh mì on one block
Ngon cafe is the second location I’ve visited on this block, with Obahnmi being the first. Inside, the cafe was warm and inviting, not too quiet, and good decor.
I ordered the Ngon special, which cost me around ~$10 with a 12% tip.
Lets dive in.
The Components
Bread
The bread was perfectly crisp on the outside, and pleasantly soft on the inside. Full marks
Veg
They’ve got cucumber (sliced lengthwise), carrot, daikon, and cilantro. The cilantro definitely fell short here (too little, and a bit wilted), but otherwise the veg was very good.
Spread
The spread was excellent. Pate was fully present on the bottom half of the sandwich, and beyond that I believe they must have used sriracha instead of jalapeno for spice. It worked great, in my opinion. Hats off for their “house special” sauce.
Meat
I ordered the Ngon Special, which includes braised pork, siu mai(?), and fried egg. This was outstanding. The meat was thinly shaved, the egg was a nice addition, the marination / meat sauce was perfection. Wow, this was good.
Overall Impression
The chef in charge of making the menu did a great job of adapting the bánh mì I ordered for local sensibilities, and I have no doubt their more traditional bánh mì are also excellent.
Recommendation
Full hearted recommendation. This is probably the best bánh mì I’ve had yet. I highly recommend checking this place out, it’s fantastic.
