Chau Veggie Express

Chau veggie express is up located Victoria drive. A personal favorite of my partner for their soup, they branched out not too long ago, adding meat — and bahn mi — to their restaurant. How does it stack up against the stiff competition in the neighborhood?

The Components

Bread

The bread was… different. Not bad, but more bun-y. Soft on the outside, soft on the inside. Honestly, I wasn’t a huge fan. Give me a baguette any day.

Veg

Inside, they have thick cut carrot, daikon, cucumber, and… leaf lettuce? A strange choice. There was no cilantro nor jalapeño, which I thought was an unusual choice for a restaurant that prides itself on veggies.

Spread

I’m honestly not quite sure what was in it. There was the unmistakable taste of ginger, an ingredient they use heavily in other dishes. No pate.

Meat

I ordered the chicken bahn mi. The chicken itself was flavorful, though they did leave some gristle on there - not a great first impression, but accidents happen.

Overall Impression

Clean interior, friendly service, poor bahn mi. The price was higher than the competition at ~$12 after tax.

Recommendation

It’s their take on bahn mi. Tasty enough, but leaves much to be desired. Head somewhere else nearby if you’re on the hunt for bahn mi.
